Australia’s great quality of living, good healthcare system, and breathtaking natural beauty are well-known. Despite such a backdrop, Australians still suffer from health problems, including mental health problems, chronic illnesses, and obesity. The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) estimates that 65.8% of Australian adults—34.0% overweight and 31.7% obese—are living with overweight or obesity.
Typical health issues
Obesity is among the risk factors for chronic illnesses like type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and several malignancies. The ABS noted that severe obesity more than doubled from 2.2% in 2007-08 to 4.6% in 2022-23. According to the ABS, the prevalence of obesity has been steadily increasing over time.
One major strain on the Australian healthcare system is chronic illness. And Australia is not alone. Chronic illness affects many parts of the world, both developed and developing countries. According to the ABS 2023 report, 49.9% of Australians have at least one chronic ailment, and 81.4% of Australians have at least one long-term health condition. The same report mentioned that 1 in 5 Australians suffer a mental health illness in any one year.
Anti-aging, health supplements, and longevity
With these alarming data, Australians are growing to be more proactive in enhancing their anti-aging, lifespan, and general health.
Many Australians use health supplements to boost their general well-being and health. According to a poll by the Australian Health Supplement Association (AHSA, 2022), 71% of Australians use health supplements; vitamins and minerals are the most often consumed. Popular supplements with anti-inflammatory qualities, gut health, and antioxidants are omega-3 fatty acids, probiotics, and antioxidants.
Australians are also participating in a range of regular physical exercises meant to encourage health and well-being. 65.1% of Australians engage in physical exercise, according to the ABS (ABS, 2023), mostly swimming, jogging, and walking. Deep breathing and meditation, among other mindfulness techniques, may help lower stress and enhance mental health. According to a Mindfulness and Meditation Association (MMA) poll in 2022, one in five Australians either practices mindfulness or meditation.
Onwards to health!
Australia’s health situation right now is complex. Even as the nation boasts a high quality of living and a respected healthcare system, major health issues exist. Understanding shared health issues and trends in wellness and health can help Australians be proactive in enhancing their anti-aging, lifespan, and general state of health. Australians are looking for natural and all-encompassing solutions to health and well-being, whether through hobbies, health supplements, or new trends.
