How can we treat chronic pain?

Some of the ways we can treat chronic pain are by medications, acupuncture, electrical stimulation, nerve blocks or surgery.

Less invasive methods to treat chronic pain include biofeedback and behavioural modification. Self management of chronic pain is an important part of the treatment process as well. Self management enables the patient to think, feel and do better in the treatment process, and is effective in producing results.

Medications include paracetamol, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as aspirin and naproxen. Stronger medications include some muscle relaxants and anti-anxiety drugs, as well as steroid injections at the site of pain.

Acupuncture is a traditional chinese medicine (TCM) methodology that works by regulating the flow of energy (or “qi”) in the body. Needles are placed in specific points in the body to stimulate the nerve.
